PE vs PLA Coated Paper Cups: Choosing the Right Lining for Hot and Cold Drinks

Paper cups look simple, but the thin lining that makes them leak-proof is the difference between a cup that composts, one that recycles and one that fails on a hot beverage line. For coffee shops, airlines and food brands, choosing between a PE and a PLA lining is a sourcing decision with real cost and compliance implications.

PE lining: the established choice

Polyethylene (PE) is the standard barrier for hot and cold drinks. It is reliable, inexpensive and widely available, but it makes the cup difficult to recycle because the plastic film must be separated from the paper fibre.

PLA lining: the compostable option

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a plant-based polymer that lets the cup carry an industrial-compostable claim. It performs well for cold drinks and moderately hot liquids, though it can soften at very high temperatures and typically costs more than PE.

How to decide

• Destination market: markets with strict single-use rules increasingly favour PLA or aqueous barrier coatings
• Drink temperature: verify the lining's heat resistance against your hottest product
• End-of-life claim: only claim compostable where an industrial facility actually accepts the cup
• Run size and print: confirm the coating prints cleanly with your branding
